What we do
- Run 192 charging spaces, both European sockets and USB ports, across four tables. We can charge 150 devices at a time.
To confirm - Provide free Wi-Fi with our partner Jangala.
- Keep the space dry, heated in winter and shaded in summer, with heated gazebos when it is cold.
- Show films and football matches, and keep board games on the tables.
- Share clear information about local services, safety and emergency contacts.
Why it matters
For someone living outside, a phone is not a luxury. It is the only way to reach family, a lawyer, a doctor or the emergency services, and to know what is happening. A dead battery cuts all of that off. Charging and Wi-Fi also give people a reason to gather somewhere safe, warm and dry, where volunteers and partner organisations can talk with them.

Built in our own workshop
The charging tables are trestle tables fitted with sockets in our warehouse. They run from an LPG generator, which is cheaper and cleaner than petrol. Roots started in 2017 as a one-person project turning old laptop batteries into power banks, and that upcycling spirit is still how we build most of our kit.
To confirmDon’t bin your old laptop batteries
Old laptop batteries, phone chargers, extension leads, multi-socket adaptors and USB cables all get used. Donate them to us rather than throwing them away.
